Sun, Feb 11th 2018

Athlone Town AFC manager Aaron Callaghan has added Meath man Aaron Williams to his squad ahead of the 2018 League of Ireland season.

Williams, who is from Summerhill and previously played for the local team Parkceltic Summerhill FC, was on the scoresheet in Athlone’s pre-season friendly with Shamrock Rovers last week, a game that finished in a 3-3 draw.

He joins fellow Aaron, Aaron Brilly from neighbouring town Kilcock at the midlanders as they look to compete in the top half of the first division table over the coming months.

Both men attended Scoil Dara Kilcock, a school that has produced several League of Ireland players including Shane Barrett, Ciaran Kilduff and Shane Fitzgerald.

Keep an eye out on all my social media platforms over the coming months to follow the pairs fortunes.

Brilly signs for Athlone Town

Kilcock’s Aaron Brilly has re-signed for League of Ireland first division side Athlone Town ahead of the forthcoming 2018 season.

Brilly, who left the midlanders halfway through last season for Home Farm FC, following some problems within the club, rejoins a club that are hoping for an upturn in fortunes under new manager Aaron Callaghan.

The club have been putting together a panel of players behind the scenes over the past number of weeks, with the full identity of the squad only to be released tonight.

Brilly has previously played in the League of Ireland with Longford Town and Cabinteely, as well as enjoying a spell with Newry City, so he brings with him experience beyond his years to Callaghan’s new side.

Athlone have recently played Ashbourne, Lucan United and Shamrock Rovers in pre season games, games Brilly is believed to have been involved in.

Kilcock’s Robinson Looks To Break World Record

Kilcock athlete Paul Robinson will be part of a 4 man team that will attempt to break the 4×1 mile indoor record on St. Patrick’s day.

Robinson will be joined in the AIT Arena Athlone by John Travers, Sean Tobin and Eoin Everard as they look to beat the current record of 16:12.81, set only last month by an American quartet.

Based on their average individual time of 3:57.30 the men have a great chance of creating a piece of history come Friday evening.

The Pinewood native and his team mates are captained by two-time Irish Olympian and world indoor medalist Paul O’Donovan.

So if you can, get down to Athlone at 4pm this Friday and cheer Paul on. Entry is free.
