A team made up of Gaa players who retired in the last year

By Robert Cox 07/01/21

The recent spate of retirements of footballers in the GAA has promoted us here at Extra Time Sport to put together a team made up of retirees from the game in the last twelve months.

There is quality dotted all around this team, with some decent back up on the bench also and sadly we will never get the chance to see these lads in action for their counties again in the future but they have all had fine careers and owe us absolutely nothing.

In some cases we have had to place a a player out of his favoured position, (we were a bit top heavy on lads around the middle) including Kildare’s Tommy Moolick at full forward and Colm Cavanagh of Tyrone pushed back in to full back. Both players are no strangers to the edge of the square though, with Cavanagh deployed their later on in his Tyrone career and Moolick sent to full forward in times of emergency for The Lilywhites.

Mayo and Kerry have made the headlines for retirements more than any other sides ever since Dublin won their 6th All-Ireland title in a row back on December 19th. To date, seven players have hung up their boots between both counties, with six of them making our staring fifteen.

Subs: Gordon Kelly (Clare), Sean Tobin (Meath) Johnny Byrne (Kildare), Darren Daly (Dublin), Brian Kelly (Kerry) More to follow…….
