Longford Town win inaugural O’Connor Cup

Longford Town u19s took home the inaugural Frank O’Connor Cup with an 8-4 victory over Kilcock Celtic in testing weather conditions on the Maynooth University astro turf pitch on Sunday afternoon.

The game, which was originally postponed in January due to an unplayable Kilcock Celtic pitch, produced some fantastic attacking football from both teams in the first half, with Longford edging it 4-3 at the break.

Both sides made a raft of changes in personel at half time, before emptying their benches throughout the second half as the two teams continue their pre season preperations for their respective league campaigns.

It was the League of Ireland outfit who used their experience competing at a higher level, to capitalise in the second half to come away winners on a full time score of 8-4.

Kilcock Celtic Chairman Shane Thompson spoke after the game; “Thanks again to all at Longford Town. Hopefully we can build on our friendship in the coming years. A special thanks to the O’connor family for sponsoring the cup and cheers to everyone who turned up despite the baltic conditions, to support both teams. Thanks to Longford Town u19s who fielded their strongest available team in honour of the late Frank O’Connor.”

Former Kilcock Celtic pair Patrick O’Sullivan and Josh Sherlock were involved for Longford Town.
